“What if your therapy became art?” asks Mark Hogancamp, the subject of this ingratiating documentary. After he survived being beaten nearly to death in his hometown of Kingston, NY, Hogancamp recuperated by creating an intricate miniature Belgian village, circa WWII, and peopling it with American and German soldiers and beautiful young women, all repurposed from Barbie dolls. The Marwencol saga became his emotional escape route, and when he began photographing his elaborate scenarios, his work found favor in sophisticated art circles. But there’s more to Hogancamp’s personal story than artistic fame, as Jeff Malmberg’s fascinating doc illustrates. (83 min.)
