Action, Adventure, Science fiction
Exactly the sum of its parts. Without Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Mark Ruffalo (The Incredible Hulk), and Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), this installment of Stan Lee’s Marvel Comics superhero adventures would be just another expensively produced demolition derby. But writer-director Joss Whedon’s dialogue and situations (co-written with Zak Penn, adapted from Lee and Jack Kirby’s comic book) come to life blazingly when Iron Man, the Hulk, and Black Widow do their thing, which involves saving Earth from disgruntled misfit Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and a bit of runaway technology called the Tesseract. Don’t ask, just marvel. The two-and-a-half hours fly by with a bang. Also with Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Chris Evans (Captain America), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), and the twinkly Gwyneth Paltrow as Tony “Iron Man” Stark’s squeeze, Pepper Potts. Now if they could only figure out a way to get Spider-Man into the mix. (142 min.)
