Drama, Romance
In the long-ago year of 1949, a mild-mannered businessman named Harry (Chris Cooper) with little experience in deviousness contrives to murder his wife Pat (Patricia Clarkson). The motive is unclear, and the team of director-writer Ira Sachs and writer Oren Moverman is too tangled in semi-comic characterization to offer much help -– other than that Harry plans to leave Pat, but doesn’t want to break her heart, so he’s going to poison her instead. Further complicating matters are family friend Richard (Pierce Brosnan), other woman Kay (Rachel McAdams), and other man O’Brien (David Wenham). The dialogue is unbelievable in the extreme -– did anyone ever really talk this way? Has writing problems. Nice title sequence, though (98 min.).
