The life of reggae superstar Bob Marley gets the royal treatment in filmmaker Kevin Macdonald’s straightforward, chronological documentary. Rare concert footage, period Marley interviews, and gorgeous shots of Jamaican scenery alternate with a parade of talking heads featuring Marley’s surviving band mates, relatives, and lovers. The live onstage footage from the legendary One Love Peace Concert in Kingston, 1978, is reason enough for Marley fans to see this thorough, workmanlike doc. Otherwise, we’ll have to settle for his friends’ opinion of Bob, that he was a determined individual who overcame adversity in order to further his message of musical salvation through riddim. Featuring Jimmy Cliff, Bunny Wailer, and Bob’s children Ziggy and Cedella. (145 min.)
