Re: “Life, Death, and PTSD in Oakland

It’s wonderful to see such an in-depth article about Mr. Arango’s journey and successes that highlights the important work done to address trauma and violence by numerous individuals and organizations in Oakland. The Measure Y funds that Ms. Hill-Ford mentions help support a number of these programs, and are administered through the City of Oakland’s Oakland Unite in the Department of Human Services. Oakland Unite is a public safety collaboration of community-based organizations, public agencies, and residents using proven and effective means. All Oakland Unite’s programs target Oakland’s highest risk community members and neighborhoods, with a particular focus on interrupting violence now as it is occurring. Use of evidence-based and best practices, such as trauma informed care, is a foundation of all Oakland Unite’s efforts and funding. Mental health support is an integral component of many Oakland Unite supported programs, though the resources are not sufficient to meet the full need of all those affected by trauma in Oakland.
