Fledgling comics tell one-liners and cap on people; gifted comics deliver some kind of embedded social critique. Really gifted comics turn their medium into a form of performance art. Such is the talent of Oakland comic Mark Curry, whose deadpan delivery and hysterical facial expressions took him from stand-up gigs and rap music videos to the successful ABC sitcom Hangin' with Mr. Cooper. Whether playing the part of a harassed substitute teacher or a guy being pulled over by the police, Curry does it with gusto, giving all his roles a hint of poignancy and self-irony. He's that rare comedian who can depict a hilarious but utterly paralyzing experience ("How you doing, officer? The reason I was exceeding the speed limit was due to the fact that ...") as though he were dredging up some past wound. Curry performs Thursday, Aug. 24-Sunday, Aug. 27 at Tommy T's (5104 Hopyard Rd., Pleasanton). $15-$35.
