Veteran profiler-of-rebels Nick Broomfield tells the documentary story of singer-songwriter-novelist Leonard Cohen through the late artist’s relationship with Marianne Ihlen, a Norwegian woman he met on the Greek island of Hydra in 1960. Seems the Canadian native Cohen was not only a world-class ladies’ man but also a legendary consumer of recreational drugs. And Broomfield inserts himself into the story, as one of Marianne’s lovers. Evokes Cohen’s mystique succinctly and affectionately, with a smattering of concert clips. Among the talking heads: Judy Collins, record producers John Simon and John Lissauer, and musician Ron Cornelius.
