Re: “Oakland's Ron Dellums on President Trump: 'Step Forward'

So grateful for Ron Dellums' inspiring wisdom during these fearful times. As a community activist and public interest lawyer who was used to fighting against what I saw as the political corruption of City Hall and lack of caring by City bureaucrats, I never imagined that I would go work for the City of Oakland. Working for Ron Dellums when he was Mayor of Oakland and continuing on his legacy inside City government after he left was the most transformative experience of my life. I got to see Ron suit up every day to give Oakland his very best, despite the City being on the brink of bankruptcy and escalating community needs. He led Oakland's efforts to secure federal funds, bringing in over $350 million in new federal & state funds AND prioritized the new funds for jobs for low income residents; he led climate justice efforts including creating the Oakland Green Jobs Corp to promote the environment and fight poverty; he developed new wrap-around services for people coming out of the prison system; he led the reforms of OPD--finally a mayor who was willing to stand up to the Police Union and take the heat; he opened up the doors to Oakland City Hall to community residents and gave them a seat at the table. Most of all, he never wavered from doing the right thing despite the noise from the media or political detractors and he was loving and kind to the young people of Oakland and to City staff. It was a tremendous honor and privilege to have had the opportunity to work for him when he was Mayor. And I'm so grateful that he's devoting his life now to training the next generation of social justice warriors.
