Re: “Oakland City Council Candidate Chris Young Suspended by State Bar

If the listed duties are accurate, I think the State Bar would consider them attorney work.

Re: “Oakland City Council Candidate Chris Young Suspended by State Bar

If the duties described are accurate, Chris Young has been acting as an attorney, full stop. The State Bar's rules are very strict.

Re: “Oakland Officials Wrestle for Control Over New Police Commission Staff Positions

Measure LL, the subject of which is creation of an INDEPENDENT Citizens Police Review Board was passed by 83% of Oakland voters. I would argue that the voters have already de facto changed, or overridden any contrary Charter language. Obviously, the City Attorney cannot exercise such control as hiring, firing and evaluating the Commission's legal staff.

Re: “Permanently Temporary

This is a fight I'm familiar with. Negotiated my TPT contract shortly after going to work for (then) SEIU 790 in 1987, and several thereafter. We always pushed for more FT hiring of part-timers, or at least more Permanent Part-Time (Civil Service, same benefits as FT). We made gains over the years in pay and benefits, less in FT positions. It looks as if the City is abusing the category more than ever now, which reflects the trend in employment as a whole.

Re: “Opinion: Getting the Shaft From Schaaf

Union workers are fighting for their families. They don't want to "fit in" and join the race to the bottom. And the Oakland workers are definitely not "under skilled" and "under educated." They have to do well in very competitive civil service exams to be hired. Their performances are evaluated annually. They have to pass a probation period. Unions are the best hope of maintaining a middle class, despite attempts to diminish and break them.

Support these folks. The decent salaries and benefits they have struggled for may one day belong to your kids.

Re: “Arson in Oakland: Is Someone Torching New Developments?

Suddenly concerned about the new condo construction across the street. Will it be torched and will my buildings and neighboring buildings be evacuated or even catch fire? This is not the way to stop gentrification, higher rents, and displacement.
