Marcus Roberts Trio CD Release

When: Tue., Oct. 27, 8 & 10 p.m. 2009
Price: $20

Landing a gig with the Wynton Marsalis gave pianist Marcus Roberts a fairly high profile in the jazz world, but he actually has more allure as a soloist. Blind from age five, Roberts initially taught himself how to play piano in church. Within a couple decades became one of the world's foremost experts on ragtime and stride piano (technically a tough form, unless you have four hands). He's one of those rare instrumentalists who plays cleanly but can still swing. His style harks back to an earlier era with its left-handed four-beat basslines and right-hand riffs. Today, it sounds fresh. Marcus Roberts Trio plays Yoshi's San Francisco (1330 Fillmore St.) on Tuesday, Oct. 27, with Roland Guerin on bass and Jason Marsalis on drums. 8 & 10 p.m., $20.
