Mara Hruby

When: Wed., Dec. 28, 8 p.m. 2011
Price: $12

Mara Hruby's debut EP turned out to be quite an undertaking. From Her Eyes is a covers album of sorts, but one in which she reinterprets a wide range of R&B, hip-hop, and other styles originally featuring male protagonists, from a female perspective. The release, which features everything from Bob Marley's "Is This Love" to Andre 3000's "Take Off Your Cool," was arranged and recorded all by Hruby, who gave it a cohesive skin that's clean and smooth. Raised in the Bay Area, Hruby says non-musical influences such as dance are integral to how she creates her songs. From Her Eyes is R&B in a Nineties sense, but with instrumentation that's uncharacteristically sparse and rare during times like these, when over-layered electronics are the order of the day. She'll be performing with Chris Turner, who's also down the street at Vitus later that night. The evening will feature her own songs as well as, one imagines, plenty of soulful and creative covers. At Yoshi's (510 Embarcadero West, Oakland) on Wednesday, Dec. 28. 8 p.m., $15.
