Bethany Reservoir State Recreation Area Bike trails, fishing, boat ramps, windsurfing, windmills. Seven miles off I-580 at the Grant Line Rd. exit, Livermore.

East Shore Eight miles of shoreline extending from the Bay Bridge to the Shoreline Trail in Richmond. A work in progress; ultimately it will include 1,817 acres of land.

Franks Tract State Recreation Area A popular destination for fly-fishing and hunting waterfowl that is only reachable by water. Located southeast of Brannan Island between False River and Bethel Island.

Lake Del Valle Fishing, swimming, and boat launching and rental as well as 3,997 acres for hiking, horseback riding, and nature study. 7000 Del Valle Rd., Livermore.

Mount Diablo State Park Hiking, biking, horseback riding, rock climbing, and camping. Mount Diablo Scenic Blvd., Danville.

PUBLIC GARDENS

Berkeley Rose Garden More than 3,000 rose bushes and 250 varieties of roses, along with tennis courts, picnic area, trails, ornamental pool, amphitheater. Euclid Ave. and Bayview Pl., Berkeley, 510-644-6530.

Japanese Garden Combines traditional Japanese gardening principles with native California landscaping. Pathways, teahouse, and sitting areas. North Third St. and Crescent Ave., Hayward, 510-881-6715.

Joaquin Miller Park Home to 500 acres of redwood groves and other native California trees and plants, trails for biking, hiking and walking, picnic and wedding areas, cascades, and the Woodminster Amphitheater. 3590 Sanborn Dr., Oakland, 510-382-3187.

Tilden Botanic Garden A 10-acre garden that allegedly showcases the world's most complete collection of plants indigenous to California. Wildcat Canyon Rd. and South Park Dr. in Tilden Regional Park, Berkeley.
