Re: “Meet Oakland's New Go-To Lobbyist

Mr. Kakishiba and Mr. Gammon
We are Latino leaders of the Fruitvale area. We represent the association of push cart vendors, taco truck association, the International Boulevard Merchants Association, and parents who use the Cesar Chavez soccer field.
Your attack of Carlos Plazola is wrong. Carlos is a devoted leader in our community. Over the last 7 years Carlos has:
• Supported the establishment of the Association of Push Cart Vendors of Fruitvale—helping some of the most marginalized people of Fruitvale find ways to become business owners. He helped us establish city laws protecting our rights and has always been an advocate of the poor and disenfranchised.
• Supported the establishment of the Taco Truck Association and helped us develop laws to protect our rights when we were under attack in the city of Oakland.
• Supported the strengthening of the small businesses along International Boulevard and worked with us to improve our community.
• Was the key person responsible for establishing the successful after school program at Cesar Chavez Education Center that serves over 700 kids per week at almost no cost.
• Helped establish the day labor center, and has helped clean up areas of drug dealing, and always been responsive to the needs of our community.
We write this to tell you that we stand with Carlos Plazola, Mr. Kakishiba.
To the East Bay Express: You have attacked Mr. De La Fuente, Mr. Tony Batarse, Mrs. Ana Chretien, and now Mr. Plazola, all leaders of our Latino community. Clearly you have issues with Latinos and it is time for you to stop attacking our community.
Manuel Beltran, push cart vendors
Gregorio Pelayo, Taco Truck Vendors
Hugo Guerrero, International Boulevard Merchants Association
Jorge Abrego, organizer of youth soccer programs at Cesar Chavez
