Action, Martial arts
Keanu Reeves’ directorial debut is a busy but relatively routine martial arts actioner about a humble Beijing delivery man (former Matrix series stunt man Tiger Chen Hu) whose skills in the “soft” technique of tai chi propel him into the sinister designs of a ruthless Hong Kong-based promoter of clandestine to-the-death prize fights (Reeves, at low simmer). Along for the ride are reliable HK character players Karen Mok and Simon Yam, as Hong Kong cops, alongside actress Qing Ye, Chen’s love interest. At least filmmaker Reeves is unafraid to make fun of himself and the genre. The production values by China Film Group are first-class, as is Chen’s fight choreography. Screenplay by Michael G. Cooney. (105 min.)
Director: Keanu Reeves
Producer: Lemore Syvan and Daxing Zhang
Cast: Tiger Chen, Keanu Reeves, Karen Mok, Simon Yam, Ye Qing, Yu Hai, Sam Lee and Iko Uwais
