Action, Adventure, Fantasy
Nothing really astonishing here, just a long, drawn-out rehash of the familiar origins of DC Comics’ Superman, played by English actor Henry Cavill in shades of gray, à la the movie’s color scheme. The filmmakers — screenwriters David S. Goyer and Christopher Nolan, and director Zack Snyder — spend what feels like half the film on the doomed planet Krypton, trying to suss out what went wrong, and the second half on Earth, where Clark Kent benefits/suffers from an overkill of special effects while fighting the bad guy, a Krypton usurper named Zod (Michael Shannon). Shannon, as usual, is the most interesting actor on the screen. The effects are undoubtedly costly but they look cheap. We could say the same for the writing and acting. Poor mythology, dumber than most. Costarring Amy Adams, Russell Crowe, Diane Lane, Kevin Costner, Ayelet Zurer, and Laurence Fishburne. (143 min.)
