The hand of executive producer Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth) is evident in this enthralling, genuinely scary fairy tale about two young orphaned sisters, lost in the woods, and what happens when they’re claimed by their uncle (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and his girlfriend (Jessica Chastain) in defiance of the girls’ “earth mother,” a grotesquely bent ghost who haunts them after they’re rescued. Chastain turns in a better performance here than in either The Tree of Life or Zero Dark Thirty, but it’s the forbidding gothic visuals – by director Andy Muschietti and his cinematographer Antonio Riestra – that make Mama unforgettable. Costarring Megan Charpentier and Isabelle Nélisse as the girls. Screenplay by siblings Andy and Barbara Muschietti and Neil Cross, adapted from a 2008 short film by the Muschiettis (100 min.)
