Making the Road by Walking

When: July 23-Aug. 21 2011

"Searcher, there is no road. We make the road by walking." Taking its name from Antonio Machado's poetry, this show pairs Thomas Haag and Martin Webb, two painters who find inspiration in daily life, and especially in travel. Haag is a peripatetic factotum who has traveled the world, painting. Webb just returned from Senegal, where the national slogan is, "Work. Work again. Always work. Keep on working." For this show, the artists worked together to an unusual degree, using identical-size square-format birch panels, so the interplay between Haag's colorful surrealism ("An emotion moved through us like weather") and Webb's more subdued allusiveness ("If you get there before I do") is nicely balanced. Collage/assemblage, graffiti, figuration, and abstraction combine perfectly in these complementary visual tone poems. Walk this way. Making the Road by Walking runs through Aug. 21 (closing tea, 3-6 p.m.) at The Compound Gallery (1167 65th St., Oakland). 510-817-4042 or TheCompoundGallery.
