The movie runs out of gas before the bus does, but the original footage of author/LSD pioneer Ken Kesey (One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest) and his acid-tripping Merry Pranksters driving their psychedelic bus from the Bay Area to New York City in 1964, is a true pop-cultural historical document. Filmakers Alex Gibney (Taxi to the Dark Side, Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson) and Alison Ellwood rescued Kesey’s 16mm film from rusty film cans in an Oregon barn, and despite the stoned mise-en-scene it’s a treasure trove of pre-hippie-era Americana from an era that seems more innocent and tolerant than today. Narrated by Stanley Tucci. (107 min.)
