Romantic comedy
Magic in the Moonlight – Woody Allen’s 49th directorial effort shows what happens when a successful stage magician (Colin Firth) sets out to discredit what he thinks is a phony spiritualist (Emma Stone), but falls in love with her instead. And no wonder – in those luxurious French Riviera settings we might even catch ourselves imagining there’s something more to this soufflé of a romantic comedy than just Firth and Stone’s coy play-acting. But there really isn’t. The scenery is intensely gorgeous, the dialogue soothingly civilized, but this genteel time-waster is essentially toothless. Nice character support by Simon McBurney, Eileen Atkins, and Hamish Linklater (97 min.).
