Romantic comedy
Greta Gerwig’s shift from High Priestess of Mumblecore to one of the American film industry’s most expressive leading ladies is now complete. As her usual charmingly discombobulated urbanite, here yearning to become a single mom, Gerwig turns in her best performance since Frances Ha. It’s bolstered immensely by the presence of Julianne Moore and Ethan Hawke as a pair of hectoring intellectuals, and by the guiding light of writer-director Rebecca Miller, who fashioned the screenplay from a story she wrote with Karen Rinaldi. This may be the best cast Gerwig has ever worked with. It’s certainly some of her best dialogue. Picks up where Gerwig’s Noah Baumbach rom-coms left off, with the saving grace of a generous sense of humor. Costarring Bill Hader and Maya Rudolph (98 min.).
