Action, Adventure
Thirty years after he made Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, Australian filmmaker George Miller resumes the dystopian action saga with a vengeance, in this electrifying sequel starring English actor Tom Hardy as Max, still running at top speed from an army of goons on wheels in the desert. Double bravo for Miller’s decision to use CGI very sparingly – relying instead on astounding live-action stunt work and miraculous staging. Triple bravo, too, for having Hardy’s Max team up with a righteous female warrior named Imperator Furiosa, played to the hilt by Charlize Theron. Director Miller, who wrote the screenplay with Brendan McCarthy and Nick Lathouris, is clearly at the height of his powers. This is everything we desire in a summer popcorn movie, and more. Costarring Miller veteran Hugh Keays-Byrne as the head bad guy (120 min.).
