Macy Gray DJ Set

When: Sat., Aug. 11, 10:30 p.m. 2012
Price: $18-$25

Anyone who's seen videos of Macy Gray can attest to her allure as a performer, and she's even better live. With a strong jaw, saucy Afro, and brassy fashion sense to underscore her usually high, raspy voice, Gray is one of the most electrifying singers in contemporary pop. It's no surprise that she's remained viable for more than a decade. But when Gray graces Oakland this week, she won't be mounting a choreographed stage show with a giant funk band in tow. Rather, she'll reveal another slice of her personality through an original DJ set. She's the latest in a spate of high-profile singers to try DJing -- her occasional collaborator, Erykah Badu, had the same conceit last year when she spun a set at Mezzanine under the moniker DJ Lo Down Loretta Brown. Apparently, it's an excellent opportunity to test out a smaller, more intimate stage (what's known in the industry as "an underplay"), while courting a new muse. Macy Gray spins at Yoshi's (510 Embarcadero West, Oakland) on Friday, Aug. 10. 10:30 p.m., $18-$25,
