Superb character acting by John Hawkes, Elle Fanning, and Glenn Close anchor this enchantingly downbeat portrait of jazz pianist Joe Albany (Hawkes), his teenage daughter (Fanning), and the girl’s grandmother (Close), skating close to the edge in a Seventies-era Los Angeles landscape of heroin, incessant living-room rehearsal, and broken promises. Director Jeff Preiss’ scene-setting – from a screenplay by Amy Albany and Topper Lilien, adapted from Albany’s memoir – compares favorably to a vintage Charles Bukowski, or to the grim nostalgia of Gus Van Sant’s Drugstore Cowboy. Not for everyone, but for its intended audience it’s a surprisingly romantic walk down Junkie Lane. Lena Heady, Caleb Landry Jones, and Peter Dinklage costar (114 min.).
