Biography, Historical drama
The true story of Richard and Mildred Loving (played by Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga), whose interracial marriage paved the way for a constitutional amendment to abolish race-based restrictions on marriage in the 1960s, is more than a routine trip to the bad old days of America. In the hands of writer-director Jeff Nichols (Mud, Shotgun Stories) and actors Edgerton and Negga, the aptly named Lovings’ story is the chronicle of a profound act of courage and true devotion, with fine character performances and a sure sense of history. Apt supporting perfs by Michael Shannon, Nick Kroll, and Bill Camp, too. A first-class actors’ clambake, and one that actually has real-world significance (123 min.).
