Loving Janis

When: Sun., Aug. 18, 8 p.m. 2019
Price: $15-$18
Oakland’s Kyra Gordon is a versatile singer, performer, songwriter and playwright. She’s a founding member of The Freeze, an improvisational hip-hop collective known for its humorous take on the genre, and fronts Captain Input, a funky combo that blends folk rock and world music. Her latest project is Loving Janis, a one-woman show tracing her lifelong fascination with both Janis Joplin and Janis Ian. She uses their music to describe her own artistic development, weaving together the life stories of three woman artists into a compelling tale that reads like the pages of an intimate diary. Peppering her presentation with her humorous asides, Gordon asks evocative questions about what it means to be a woman and a rock’n’roller in today’s America. Pianist Larry Steelman, known for his work with a diverse array of artists, including Mick Jagger and Dizzy Gillespie, provides his improvisational skills to keep the narrative moving along.
