When Janos (Ivan Darvas) is arrested as a political dissident by the Hungarian secret police, his young wife, Luca (Mari Torocsik), will have to convince Janos' sickly mother, Az (Lili Darvas), that her son is actually living in New York City. She does this by fabricating several letters from Janos, which tell of his good fortune in America where he's the director of a big-time Hollywood movie. As his mother eagerly awaits her son's return, the two women develop a close friendship.
