John Lithgow and Alfred Molina shine in the roles of a senior-citizen gay married couple facing bleak prospects in New York City when one of them gets fired and they lose their apartment. The same-sex marriage angle is only the starting point for filmmaker Ira Sachs’ enthralling character study, which takes in various friends and relatives played by Marisa Tomei, Darren Burrows, and Charlie Tahan, in a sensitive performance as the Lithgow character’s teenage grand-nephew. For writer-director Sachs (Keep the Lights On) and writer Mauricio Zacharias, the potential social-problem framework is only a springboard to something richly universal. Recommended (98 min.).
