Los Rumberos de la Bahia

When: Sept. 20-21, 8 p.m. 2019
Price: $35.00
When Michael Spiro met José Luis Gómez in the early 1980s, they were immediately drawn together by their love of Cuban music, in particular the rhythms of the rumba. After meeting Regino Jiménez Sáez, a Cuban teacher, performer and master bata drummer, they delved deeper into the music that inspired them and founded Los Rumberos de la Bahia. When Sáez passed in 2004, Gómez and Spiro decided to make an album in his honor. It took almost a decade to put the project together, but the result, Mabagwe, has been getting rave reviews since its release in 2018. The set was nominated for Best Traditional Afro-Cuban record by the Cubadisco (Cuban Grammys) organization. The group will be celebrating its nomination with an all-star concert featuring some of the top names in the Bay Area’s Latin music scene.
