.Los Chivas Are Back in Town

Mexican InterLiga two-fer at Spartan Stadium

Wed 1/5

Les gusta el futból mejicano? Of course you do. Since the departure of Earthquakes star forward Landon Donovan for the German Bundesliga, the best soccer football club action on this side of the continent takes place in Mexico, where such teams as Chivas de Guadalajara, Atlante, Necaxa, and Club America compete fiercely in a confusing — for gringos — interlocking network of leagues. As a treat for Mexican soccer fanáticos in the Bay Area, there’s a special InterLiga 2005 doubleheader tonight (Wednesday, 7 p.m.) at San Jose’s Spartan Stadium. In the first game, it’s the Warriors of Santos Laguna vs. Tigres UANL (Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León). Then in the showcase match, powerhouse Atlante from Mexico City takes on perennial favorite Chivas (look for veteran Mexico international delantero Francisco Palencia). Chivas is famous for having fielded only Mexican players since its founding in 1908. Tickets range from $20 endzone general admission to $40 for VIP reserved, from Ticketmaster.com — Kelly Vance

It’s Your Tern

You know the drill

Attention, wildlife lovers: President Bush wants to open the coastal plain in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil drilling. Like many of our Fearless Leader’s plans, this just might come to a disastrous end, especially for the polar bears, musk oxen, snowy owls, walrus, seals, snow geese, caribou, Arctic terns, and bowhead whales who live nearby. Author Chad Kister believes that the development would yield only a six-month supply of oil, but would destroy the refuge into the bargain. He speaks and shows slides on the subject Thursday evening (7-9 p.m.) at the Ecology Center, 2530 San Pablo Ave., Berkeley. Info: EcologyCenter.org — Kelly Vance
