Re: “Oakland Council Approves Circus Safety Rules But Doesn’t Ban Bullhooks for Now

I urge the Oakland City Council to please do more research on the suffering, fear and damage inflicted on elephants by bullhooks and to please consider, as soon as possible, a complete ban on the use of bullhooks.. (YouTube has many enlightening videos that can be found by typing "bullhooks on elephants" or "ringling elephant abuse" into their search box, and Dr. Joyce Poole explained bullhook abuse in the acclaimed HBO documentary, "An Apology to Elephants"). Bullhooks are weapons of terror for elephants. They're not "guides" as the abusers call them; they're used to strike, beat, and hook elephants in their most sensitive areas like their ears and genitals to force them to obey. Best of all would be for Oakland, a progressive city in a progressive state, to ban the use of all wild animals in circuses. Thirty countries have now done that (even the U.K. will enact a ban in late 2015) but the U.S. and Canada are woefully behind the times. Life in a circus is NO life for elephants or other wild animals and I hope people educate themselves about the animals' suffering, then have the compassion, integrity and courage to tell Feld Entertainment to take their circus elsewhere. As far as their monster trucks or Disney on Ice, if Feld pulls those human-only shows from Oakland if a bullhook ban is passed, they're just being the petulant, ruthless bullies that they are. I say good riddance to them. There are ethical ways to support the local economy without selling out and condoning animal abuse.

Re: “Ringling Bros. Threatens To Pull Circus Out Of Oakland If the City Bans Bullhooks

Feld is threatening to pull out if bullhooks are banned? Good riddance! Cities (and the entire country) need to evolve towards the humane treatment of animals, and bullhooks are a brutal, fearsome weapon used to control circus elephants. They have NO place in a civilized society. Circuses keep spewing the nonsense that their elephants are trained and taught tricks through positive reinforcement. If that's true, then there should be no need for bullhooks. Let Feld prove that. Take away his bullhooks. If Feld can't see the writing on the wall - that the days of using and abusing wild animals to make them perform stupid, joint-destroying tricks for human amusement are ending, he's in denial and a poor businessman. If he was smart, he and his daughters would eliminate all animal acts and model their circus on the human-only Cirque du Soleil style. We will eventually ban bullhooks everywhere, if we don't first ban the use of wild animals in circuses as over 30 other countries have done.
