Comedy, Drama
Director Ken Loach doesn’t do “light-hearted” very often, but this amiable sitcom about a sheepish Manchester postal clerk named Eric Bishop (part-time actor Steve Evets) who gets make-believe help from former soccer star Eric Cantona (as himself) in straightening out his life, qualifies as sugar candy in a sour social wrapper. Screenwriter and frequent Loach collaborator Paul Laverty (The Wind that Shakes the Barley) takes care to show us the down side of parenting in working-class Northern England while Frenchman Cantona spouts his customary aphorisms in hard-to-follow accented English. Loach should have supplied subtitles, à la Riff-Raff (116 min.).
