When you’re in Berkeley, if you want to take your kids out for an Alice Waters-approved dinner of organic vegetables and pasture-raised beef without having to change out of your flip-flops, you’ve got options. If, on the other hand, you’re craving a steak late at night, well, then the pickings start to get awfully slim. That, perhaps more than anything, is what Longbranch Saloon has brought to the table. Yes, there are 25 craft beers on tap and a ten-page whiskey list, but more than that, Longbranch is the rare Berkeley restaurant where you can get a full dinner until 11:30 p.m. six nights a week. Chef David Stevenson’s food falls squarely in the broad category of elevated, California-inflected pub fare. None of it is cutting-edge, but much of it is quite good — especially the balanced, well-made salads and the array of bar snacks, such as the unctuous potted pork trotter and the soft, stretchy Wisconsin-style fried cheese curds.
