Star chefs Roy Choi and Daniel Patterson set an ambitious goal when they announced their plans for LocoL, a “revolutionary” fast food restaurant that aims to bring unpretentious, affordable eats to the food deserts and swamps of America — to, in Choi’s words, “upend the fast-food industry” by battling the McDonald’s and Taco Bells of the world on their home turf. What’s notable is that this is very clearly a restaurant for people who like fast food — which is to say the food tastes good without feeling sanctimonious. The LocoL Cheeseburg, with its carefully engineered 70-percent beef/30-percent grain patty, might take the crown for the best cheeseburger in Oakland you can buy for $5. And while health considerations led the chefs to leave fries off the menu, LocoL offers a slew of tasty side items, from taco-quesadilla hybrids (aka “foldies”) to Southern-inspired beef gravy and greens — in other words, you’ll hardly miss the omission.
