Local Natives

When: Thu., Sept. 12, 8 p.m. 2013
Price: $29.50
Local Natives are a quintessential modern indie-rock band, in that they successfully draw from folk, psych, and rock. Aptly described by Pitchfork as a “sort of a West Coast Grizzly Bear,” the group has also drawn well-deserved comparisons to Fleet Foxes, Animal Collective, and Arcade Fire. Their 2010 debut album, Gorilla Manor, was tightly composed and earnest, full of youthful malaise and yearning. Their second release, this year’s Hummingbird, is just as beautiful, but bleaker; it’s clear the former roommates and high school friends are growing up. They’re excellent live, and they’ll be joined at the Fox Theater (1807 Telegraph Ave., Oakland) by dream-pop act Wild Nothing, whose music is textured, lush, and atmospheric. Its lovelorn songs make for easy listening, as they’re grounded with aspects of new wave and synth pop, and are full of catchy hooks.
