Re: “Stop Blaming Artists and Musicians for the Ghost Ship Fire. Blame People In Power Who Screwed Up.

I got a post that the NYT is putting significant resources into covering the Ghost Ship fire. They are even asking the public to suggest avenues of investigation.
I found this when I followed up:

No one made Ion build that staircase. And, no one made people perform in "an exquisite deathtrap" as one previous promoter put it. Hold the powerful accountable, but also let the counterculture know that they don't need to go like lambs to the slaughter.
"With that show, I thought, It's at that spot? Fuck that place," Buchanan said. "The last time I was there, I stood by the exit the whole time just in case there was a fire. Having an event there with ten people to me is criminal negligence." This quote is from one of your own articles. Ion, was a particularly reckless player, enabled by others who felt they were serving a greater good.

Re: “Artists Who Survived Oakland Warehouse Fire Discuss The Tragedy, Those Missing, Need for Safe Underground Spaces

From what I've read/heard, the actual residents of the space knew the danger and were somewhat prepared -- there had been small fires there before. It was holding a party on the almost inaccessible second floor that was the height of insanity. Some people should got to jail for this, but a creative solution for some amount of housing or accommodations could come out of this. Could. There are a lot of competing interests and desires. It will take time.

Kelley. Skilled people like you do need to come together to help some venues and educate promoters, patrons, performers, etc., but the Ghost Ship was so below safety standards that only a padlock on the door was the safe solution.

The young, the poor and the rebellious have been using unsafe spaces since A/E left the Garden. How many children will die this year in Christmas tree fires? If the city boarded up all of the unsafe spaces there would be an outcry from the street and the landlords.
Where possible the community needs to take things into their own hands to save themselves. Who in their right minds looked at that staircase and thought it was acceptable? I've done events. What a b**ch to do things right. This was not even close.
