Lizz Wright CD Release

When: March 6-8, 8 & 10 p.m. 2008
Price: $20-$24

The daughter of a Georgia minister, jazz vocalist Lizz Wright grew up singing in church choirs and later trained in opera. She debuted five years ago with Salt, an extraordinary fusion album that featured original ballads, Gospel, R&B, Latin, and a couple standards, all sung in a vivid contralto that better resembled soul singers like Roberta Flack than the Hiromis and Norah Joneses of today. Wright switched over to folk for her 2005 album Dreaming Wide Awake, which included a hair-raising cover of Neil Young's "Old Man" with a bluegrass banjo arrangement. Wright graces Yoshi's (510 Embarcadero West, Oakland) from Thursday, March 6 to Saturday, March 8 to celebrate the release of her new album, The Orchard. 8 p.m., 10 p.m., $20-$24. Yoshis.com
