Live Jazz and Live Skateboarding

When: Sat., June 7, 7:30 p.m. and Sun., June 8, 4 p.m. 2014
Price: $25, $35
This Saturday and Sunday, the SFJAZZ Center’s Miner Auditorium (201 Franklin St., San Francisco) will transform into a softly lit, highbrow skate park. Reprising last spring’s successful collaboration, jazz pianist Jason Moran and his Bandwagon combo (electric bassist Tarus Mateen and drummer Nasheet Waits) will perform while a team of professional skateboarders glide and grind on a half-pipe in front of the stage. While punk and hip-hop may be the go-to soundtracks for skate videos, the 39-year-old Moran’s nimble riffs fit perfectly with the skaters’ in-the-moment physicality. The first time around, the band fed and built off of the skaters’ fluid motion and aerial tricks, with both groups improvising and expanding on their chosen practice. As skateboarder Jabari Pendleton told the crowd in 2013, “It’s all our art.... You can see ourselves in what we do.” Turn up to see and hear just how much these pros can reveal with only three instruments and eight-wheels.
