Liu Yu

When: Sat., Nov. 5, 2:30 p.m. 2011
Price: free

At age eleven, Liu Yu escaped being sent to the Chinese countryside for re-education by the government, instead leaving her family behind to train in martial arts. Her memoir, Awakening the Sleeping Tiger, lifts the veil of Communist China to follow its heroine to Olympic Heights, freedom, and beyond. The now San Luis Obispo-based Yu appears on Saturday, Nov. 5, at the Asian Branch of the Oakland Public Library (388 9th St., Ste. 190). 2:30 p.m., free. 510-238-3400 or OaklandLibrary.org
