Little Scream

When: Sat., Nov. 12, 9:30 p.m. 2011
Price: $10

On her first album, Montreal's Laurel Sprengelmeyer did everything right. Drawing on local resources, she recruited Arcade Fire's Richard Reed Perry as producer, and also included guitar work from New York rock savants Bryce and Aaron Dessner of The National. Since releasing her aptly-titled The Golden Record early this year, she toured with fellow indie space cadets Sharon Van Etten and The Antlers. Finally, she's seeing her gripping live show make headlines. Sprengelmeyer's songwriting and technical skill belie a style that on the surface might seem conventional. Her voice is sweet, recalling an artist like Mirah, but she also packs a killer electric guitar tone and expert use of effects. Live, she captures the grandiose, beautifully looming rock 'n' roll sound exactly as it's presented on the album. Moments can be quite intimate ("The Heron And The Fox") or epic ("Boatman" or "Canons"). And don't skip out on opening act BOBBY, especially if you're looking to get lost in reverie. The band has perfected a brilliantly layered, long-form style that envelops and stretches the listener across a dreamy, abstract rock canvas. Both acts play at Bottom of the Hill (1233 17th St.,San Francisco) on Saturday, Sept. 12. 9 p.m., $10.
