If British filmmaker Paul Morrison really intended to boil down the Spanish Civil War to a gay love story between poet Federico García Lorca (Javier Beltrán) and painter Salvador Dalí (Robert Pattinson), while future Surrealist film director Luis Buñuel (Matthew McNulty) looks on, he would have been wise to not pretty it up too much. The trio’s schooldays in Madrid in the 1920s are made to look silly — Dalí in his puffy shirt, the boys insulting army officers at dinner, etc. It’s a case of using conventional style to tell a story about unconventional people, and screenwriter Philippa Goslett is the worst offender of them all. Everyone concerned makes little asses of themselves (112 min.).
