Re: “A History of Violence

The photo of the Shetman tank is a classic, and is emblematic of the the violence, racism, and inhumanity of 60's urban renewal. The tank is about to tear down a home in my neighborhood of Lower Bottoms. After this and over a hundred others were destroyed, the land at the heart of the neighborhood sat empty for more than a decade.

Re: “Starving Students Movers Company Caught on Video Dumping Furniture in West Oakland

Way to go! We get this kind of dumping way too often in Lower Bottoms and, as this video so clearly shows, all over West Oakland. Let's put a stop to this shameful, disrespectful behavior.

Re: “In Oakland, Too, Fast Food Is Going Loco’l

My vote would be for a location in the Lower Bottom neighborhood of West Oakland, near the BART station. Definitely a food desert - something like Loco'l would fill
a gaping need and be much appreciated!

Re: “The Fight to Develop West Oakland

West Oakland desperately needs healing. In particular, Lower Bottoms, the neighborhood around the West Oakland BART station, has suffered from a barren wasteland of empty, undeveloped lots for far too long. I have lived here for many years, and it is incredibly frustrating to see those who prefer the status quo resorting to throwing rocks through windows. The specific plan seems to be well-thought-out, and desperately needed. I, for one, wholeheartedly support it.

Re: “West Oakland's Kilovolt Coffee Vandalized After Controversial Redevelopment Plan Gains Approval

The folks at KiloVolt are Lower Bottoms heroes, and the ridiculous actions of the Occupy crowd have only demonstrated this (and given them some well-deserved publicity).

Re: “Why Gentrification Is Not Inevitable

As a long time resident of Lower Bottoms, a "gentrifying" neighborhood in West Oakland, I can say that I am happy to read a thoughtful article on the subject. To us here, the debate often seems to be a shouting match between outsiders of various stripes - some with money who want to raise rents, and some with megaphones who want to attack buses and deface people's property. Neither side cares much about the history and tradition of the neighborhood, and neither side represents very many in the complex mix of people here.

We are certainly worried about being priced out, of losing our homes, of being forced to move. But most of the newcomers are good folks, also looking for a place they can afford to live. It's refreshing to see people fixing up and taking pride in old homes. And this mix of old and new keeps our neighborhood alive.

The subject not touched much in the article is that of crime, which affects all of us. We need more respectful, well-behaved, hard-working police officers on our beats. We shouldn't need more more white faces, or more money, to ensure that our neighborhood is a safe place for everyone.
