Re: “Lafayette Barbecue Guru's Past as Hazy as His Smoke Pit

I knew Bo McSwine in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois in 1971. He had been on the University of Illinois football team for at least a while, but had graduated by 1971 (as had I). His family lived in Maywood, a suburb just about 10 miles west of the Chicago Loop--and the suburb where I grew up, although we didn't know each other then. In 1971, Bo drove an MGB hardtop. And, although he was called Bo by everyone, his name was William. It could be a different Bo McSwine, I suppose, but I don't think so. The photo I've seen looks like the Bo I knew would look more than 35 years later and the dates and places fit. The last time I saw him, he had just helped me move from Urbana to Waukegan, Illinois, about 150 miles north. He drove the U-Haul and I drove my 1962 Mercury Meteor. I can still picture him toting a double mattress up the stairs to my new apartment, with no help from me or anyone else. Bo used to talk about going to law school, although it looks like he never did. When I would wonder what happened to him, I'd figure he had either become a lawyer or gotten busted--or both. But I'm delighted to see that he took a completely different path and is very successful.
