Re: “Bishop O'Dowd Program Director Refuses to Sign Oakland Diocese's New 'Morals' Code

My two sons are both students at Bishop O'Dowd. I am heartbroken that Ms. Purcell is leaving, as well as other excellent teachers, due to the new contract language that allows the Diocese to terminate teachers if they do not follow the Roman Catholic Church's doctrine and teachings in their private lives. The teachers' private lives should be just that...private. My sons' teachers hold themselves to a high moral and ethical standard and behave in a Christ-like way, and expect my sons to do the same. I have been happy with Bishop O'Dowd's inclusive and diverse faculty and student population. This change in contract removes the legal security of teachers, and allows the diocese to terminate a teacher based upon their means of contraception? Because it doesn't agree with the Church's doctrine? I think most modern day Roman Catholics don't follow the church on this one, but don't need to fear that their jobs are in jeopordy because of their private choice concerning this matter. Sexual preference? If Pope Francis says "who are we to judge?" then why move backwards? I hope the Bishop reconsiders the contract wording. I support the teachers on this completely, and am devastated to hear about them leaving this excellent school.
