The “based on a true story” drama of San Jose Mercury News reporter Gary Webb (played by Jeremy Renner) and his 1996 investigative bombshell about a link between the Nicaraguan Contras, cocaine, the CIA, and crack dealers in US inner cities make for a nervous, exciting, and ultimately sad time at the movies – especially for the reporters in the audience. Actor Renner, with his haggard expression, is tailor-made to play the driven, conflicted Webb, and naturally when the heat gets turned up, family man Webb catches every bit of it back, not only from national security spooks but from his own “fraternity” of writers and editors. It’s enough to make you give up journalism and go into advertising. Adapted from Nick Schou’s book by screenwriter Peter Landesman, and directed in the key of thriller-minor by TV vet Michael Cuesta. Costarring Rosemarie DeWitt, Oliver Platt, Ray Liotta, and Josh Close (112 min.).
