In contemporary Tokyo, a young provincial woman named Akiko (played by Rin Takanashi), working as a high-priced escort, is sent to the home of Takashi, an elderly intellectual (stage actor Tadashi Okuno, making his screen debut at age 81). What happens next is further proof that the “foreign tour” of writer-director Abbas Kiarostami — who ventured to Italy to make Certified Copy — has proved beneficial for the Iranian filmmaker. Contains numerous “Kiarostami touches,” including ordinary misunderstandings that get amplified into a major hullaballoo, especially when Akiko’s jealous boyfriend (Ryo Kase from Letters from Iwo Jima) is factored in. At this rate, Kiarostami might never have reason to return to Tehran. (109 min.)
