Filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda, the poet of Japanese contemporary life, examines the plight of two families – one buttoned-down and businesslike, the other loosey-goosey and prone to hugs -- who discover that their respective sons, both aged 6, were switched at birth. Every single actor contributes to Kore-eda’s gratifyingly complex character study, especially Masaharu Fukuyama and Rirî Furankî as the two fathers. For fans of the “nature versus nurture” debate, it’s like walking into a candy store. Written for the screen and directed by Kore-eda (I Wish, Nobody Knows) (121 min.).
