In the last days of his life, movie critic Roger Ebert consented to having documentarian Steve James (Hoop Dreams, The Interrupters) record him and his family as they moved back and forth between home and hospital. The result is an unusually frank look at a terminal cancer patient, as well as a thorough and informative summing-up of the best known film reviewer in America – from Ebert’s early newspaper days and Pulitzer Prize to his longtime stint on TV with rival critic Gene Siskel. All along, Ebert is portrayed as a “regular guy” who happened to love movies more than just about anything else in the world. Talking heads include filmmakers Werner Herzog and Martin Scorsese, and critic Richard Corliss (118 min.).
