Comedy drama, Romance
Anchored by the honey-hued playing of Elizabeth Olsen and Josh Radnor, this gentle character study of Jesse (Radnor), a thirtysomething New Yorker accidentally finding love when he returns to his old college campus, also boasts pitch-perfect character turns. Richard Jenkins costars as Jesse’s indecisive academic mentor, with Allison Janney as an intimidating English lit prof, Zac Efron as the school bohemian, and, in a role worthy of a film all its own, John Magaro as the emotionally troubled student Jesse “adopts.” Olsen is a revelation as straight-talking freshman coed Zibby, a rare bubbly, romantic part for an actress all too often primed for stress and horror. TV stalwart Radnor, who wrote and directed, is making a statement about how much the world needs “the humanities.” Worth a close look. (97 min.)
