Comedy, Romance
Vanessa Redgrave bails out this mushy Italian-postcard romance from director Gary Winick (13 Going On 30). The title refers to a wall in Verona where lovelorn women post letters seeking advice from the Shakespeare character; these missives are collected and answered by a little team of counselors. Amanda Seyfried stars as a fact-checker for the New Yorker who finds Redgrave's 50-year-old letter hidden in the wall and, hoping to write a story, sets out to reunite the old Brit with the Italian hunk she was separated from as a young woman. This swoony tale is augmented by a flaccid love triangle in which Seyfried's character is tempted from her self-absorbed fiance (Gael Garcia Bernal) by the woman's caustic but, of course, really very sweet nephew (Christopher Egan). Anyone who considers this a decent romance should check out Max Ophuls's Letter From an Unknown Woman (93 min.).
