Docudrama, Thriller
Fascinating, ominous documentary uses one hundred percent “found” material – TV news archives, student films, taped hearing testimony, etc. – to show what happened on May 13, 1985, when Philadelphia police used explosives to drive out members of the counter-culture group MOVE from their fortified row house. The resulting fire killed eleven MOVE members, including five children, and destroyed 61 homes in the surrounding working-class neighborhood. The doc, produced and directed by Jason Osder, raises serious questions about the limits of official power. City and police officials were found negligent in letting the fire burn out of control, but no criminal charges were ever filed. No contemporary talking heads; none needed (95 min.).
Director: Jason Osder
Producer: Jason Osder and Andrew Herwitz
